Working Together to Save Energy in a Laboratory facility – Camfil and IDS
Camfil Farr have a range of energy efficient filters which in combination with ABB inverters allow the same quantity of air flow whilst consuming less power.
Working together IDS and Camfil carried out an energy efficiency motor audit and a filter energy survey on a local laboratories’ applications, mostly air handling units. We submitted our findings to Camfil who together with their filter energy survey made a complete offering to the client. The client was looking for a payback within 2 years. We received an order to fit 8 ACH550 the HVAC range of inverters onto their air handling units, we installed and commissioned the inverters which then gave the client his expected return on investment.
An extract from the survey shows the energy saved and payback time as well as the saved CO2 levels.
Application | Energy Saved kWh | Payback Time Years | CO2 Saved Tonnes |
Main Lab RD1 Extract 1×7.5kW | 28,776 | 1.75 | 12.83 |
Main Lab RD1 Supply 1x11kW | 42,205 | 1.22 | 18.82 |
Office RD2 Extract 1×7.5kW | 28,776 | 1.75 | 12.83 |
Office RD2 Supply 1x11kW | 42,205 | 1.22 | 18.82 |
Process Lab RD3 1×2.2kW | 8,441 | 4.10 | 3.76 |
Autoclave Rm RD6 1x3kW | 11,511 | 3.08 | 5.13 |
Chemistry Lab RD5 Supply 1x4kW | 15,347 | 2.44 | 6.84 |
Common Area RD7 Supply 1x4kW | 15,347 | 2.44 | 6.84 |
Working Together to Save Energy in a Laboratory facility. The laboratory engineers themselves have also benefitted from direct control of their air handling units, even reducing the operation further which has seen a quicker saving than predicted on one of the air handlers. The client has seen an overall reduction within the first month and is monitoring this over the next two quarters to give the saving results.

Jeff Jacobs from Camfil commented, “After a follow up visit recently, it was confirmed that significant savings are being shown due to the Inverter and Low Energy Filter installation”, Ian Dickinson from Camfil commented, “Utilizing Camfil low energy air filters in conjunction with ABB inverters can lead to significant energy savings in all businesses where AHU’s are installed”.
Blaise Ford of IDS says “the combination of Camfil’s high efficiency AHU filters and ABB inverters is an ideal technical solution leading to significant energy savings”.
