We offer both basic and advanced variable speed drive (VSD) courses and these can be held at our offices in Ilkeston, at ABBs service centre in Coalville or at your own premises. The advanced courses can be designed to meet the needs of your specific requirements and are therefore totally tailorable.

Basic Variable Speed Drive Training

Topics covered in the basic VSD courses include: –

This course is designed to introduce Installation and Maintenance engineers, both electrical and mechanical to Variable Speed Drives. The training is focused around practical ‘hands on’ exercises where engineers get to familiarise themselves with VSDs using a demonstration case containing an ABB VSD and motor and a simulated I/O control panel.

We can accommodate up to 8 engineers and the training lasts approximately 6 hours (09.30 to 15.30). The course includes a buffet style lunch and comprehensive training documentation. The course can be tailored to suit your requirements but generally consists of the following topics:

• What is a Variable Speed drive?
  • What components make up a VSD? How does a VSD control motor speed?
• Practical exercises.
  • What is the VSD capable of? Covering an explanation of the parameter groupings and programming of the VSD. Practical exercises include familiarity with the ABB ACS580 standard drive.
• Motor suitability and installation ‘best practice’.
  • Covering topics such as fusing, cabling, cooling, earthing, EMC, types of load, over-speeding of motors, motor connections, motor insulation and bearings currents.
• Energy saving applications.
  • How VSDs can be used to save energy through correct control and looking at the difference in efficiency between old and new VSDs.
• Basic Fault finding.
  • How we can test the VSD components with a basic multi-meter. How we can prove the external I/O of the VSD system.

Advanced Variable Speed Drive Training

Topics covered in the Advanced courses include (but not limited to): –

This course is designed for maintenance engineers, both electrical and mechanical that have a greater knowledge of Variable Speed Drives. The training is focused around practical ‘hands on’ exercises where engineers get to familiarise themselves with VSDs using a demonstration case containing an ABB VSD and motor and a simulated I/O control panel and a workshop classroom in relation to maintaining ABB VSDs. Please be aware this is not a repair training course.

• Overview of current ABB product portfolio.
  • ACS880, ACS580, ACS480 and which one should be used or considered.
• Workshop classroom – VSD maintenance requirements.
  • Hands-On – Fan replacement and heatsink cleaning correct methods.
• Practical exercises.
  • What is the VSD capable of? Covering an explanation of the parameter groupings and programming of the VSD. Practical exercises including PID loops with the ABB ACS580 standard drive.
• Motor suitability and installation ‘best practice’.
  • Covering topics such as fusing, cabling, cooling, earthing, EMC, types of load, over-speeding of motors, motor connections, motor insulation and bearings currents.
• Advanced Fault finding.
  • How we can test the VSD components with a basic multi-meter. How we can prove the external I/O of the VSD system. What values should we see from the VSD actual signals to help with fault diagnosis.
